The BBC3 programme Skin Deep; The Business of Beauty shown on 14 November 2011 highlights the latest craze in the piercing industry which could leave you with permanent disfiguring damage. This procedure involves a core of flesh being removed from the skin and an anchor point being inserted into the incision on to which a gem is attached.
This procedure is performed to all parts of the body including the face, hands, back and neck.
Areas of the body such as the hands have many nerves which are positioned very close to the skin surface and therefore risk being damaged by the piercing. There have been cases where the anchor point embeds deep into the skin requiring surgery to remove it.
The piercing industry like some other areas of the beauty industry is largely unregulated. There is no requirement for practitioners to undergo any training before marketing themselves to the public. Therefore it is advisable to research a salon before using it, to ask questions to understand the risks that may attach to a particular procedure and if you experience any problems with your piercing seek professional medical opinion urgently.
If you have had a piercing which has gone wrong or left you with unsightly scarring then please contact Martyn Trenerry on 01708 784042 to discuss the possibility of bringing a claim.
